FALL 2011 TOP 10 Denim TRENDS

Well, if you didn’t know it yet…the 90′s are back and we saw the biggest showing yet for the Fall 2011 season. Lucky for us, designers only took small tid bits from the decade’s fashion references. One of the biggest 90′s themes was a take on GRUNGE that Marc Jacobs was infamous for at the start of his career.

This time around its a bit different and has been elevated to a LUXE GRUNGE feel with dressier fabrications and elements to make it modern.

There are many styling and design elements to take note of in regard to this trend:

  1. PLAID had a huge showing on the runways and came in all types from traditional plaids to Scottish interpretations, Glenn plaids, tartans and more. Designers such as Rag and Bone, Sonia Rykiel and Libertine used tartan plaids in dresses, skirts and capes for a traditional take on the pattern. Missoni’s collection was directly inspired by grunge and featured lots of long layers with bold pastel plaids shown in long coats and full trousers. Band of Outsiders featured traditional plaid wovens under huge knit sweaters and fur hats for his version of California Preppy ala Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club. Look for everything this Fall from plaid shirts and coats to simple shift dresses and full trousers. PLAID is back, although it never actually disappeared, but this time its come back with a vengeance.
  2. LONG LAYERS are another part of this trend. With designers such as Haider Ackermann and Rick Owens on board, looks were layered with several combinations of sweaters jackets and long skirts all showing different lengths for interest. One of the biggest interpretations was seen in long flowy skirts layered with oversized chunky sweaters for a LUXE GRUNGE combination. When styling, keep the combination equal parts tough and feminine for the right appeal using more masculine accessories to top it off.
  3. CASUAL PARKAS were seen layered over soft dresses from Altuzarra and Alexander Wang for a modern take on grunge while still keeping the 90′s in tact. Again, the key to styling LUXE GRUNGE is juxtapositioning soft and luxurious fabrics with tougher casual elements. Combining parkas with soft and fluid dresses and maxi skirts is a big interpretation of this.
  4. SLIP DRESSES were a big part of the 90′s ala Courtney Love with underwear as outerwear her main contribution to the decade’s fashion. Yohji Yamamoto, Narcisso Rodriguez and BCBG Max Azria all three showed various versions of this trend. Yohji paired slipdresses with tougher accessories in midi-lengths while BCBG went for a softer approach layering turtlenecks underneath for a modest approach. Narcisso sent out a plethera of this simple idea in a beautiful palette for his sexy take on 90′s minimalism. Expect to see many getting on board this idea from Junior retailers to everyone in between as this dress will be a key item for the Fall season. Layer with oversized chunky sweaters and coats to stay on board this LUXE GRUNGE trend.
  5. A MUTED PALETTE of grey, burgundy, navy and black is key to this trend with red as a modern accent.
  6. TOUGH JACKETS & FULL TROUSERS were seen in a lot of variations but Chanel did LUXE GRUNGE at its finest with destructed tweed suits paired with chunky motorcycle boots. His post-apocalyptic theme turned Grunge modern with moth eaten and tattered tweeds, layered jackets and shredded chiffon. Chanel’s runway will be translated in the idea of taking dressier fabrications and silhouettes (tweed, chiffon and dinner jackets) and making them worn and tattered. As Karl’s approach to his collection gets younger and younger, expect Junior retailers to fawn over this idea come Fall and into next year. This idea will also been seen translated in interiors well into next year with art and accessories getting inspiration from the aged and the old and paired with a feminine environment.
  7. MIXED MOTIFS were also a big part of this trend with Dries Van Noten, Etro and Antonio Marras leading the way. They featured combinations of paisleys and florals with luxe trims and embellishments all in a muted palette of burgundy, navy and brown. Mixed patterns are something we have been seeing for awhile, however this time the mixture feels a bit more happenstance channeling the grunge era.
  8. FUR/SKINS/FEATHERS/EMBELLISHMENT are they key to the LUXE GRUNGE idea. Roberto Cavalli gave his gypsy bohemians a grungier feel this time and sent out long and layered looks encompassing all the correct elements of this trend. Looks were layered up with mixed fur and feather details, gold embellishments and exotic skins. All layered over burn-out velvets, paisleys, florals and chiffon for the best take of LUXE GRUNGE seen on the runway.

SPRING/SUMMER 2011 TOP 10 TRENDS

The denim market has been over-saturated for quite sometime now, and designers and retailers have been looking for a new take on an old classic. With the trends leaning towards the 1970′s and Utilitarian Minimalism, it was no surprise to see raw chambray like denim re-introduced on the runways for Spring. The lightweight denim serves well for suiting, full trousers and jackets (all taken from the 70′s), as well as Utilitarian A-line shaped tunics and boxy jackets. Some of the best collections from Spring featured this refreshing take on the classic including Celine, Stella McCartney and Dries Van Noten. Several other designers showed variations on the theme interpreted into their own design aesthetics.

When shopping or developing this trend, focus on key items that will be versatile within the spring wardrobe. The denim full leg trouser was perfected at Dries Van Noten with his slouchy oversized version. Derek Lam replicated the perfect high-waisted full-leg trouser and Celine wasn’t too far behind. The denim trouser will take the front seat on this trend, leading most retailers to push this item for the Spring season.

The second choice would be a boxy oversized blazer in this fabrication. Stella showed hers using traditional light-washed denim with snaps and oversized shoulders. Akris featured denim suiting pairing blazers with shorts and with full trousers. You can be sure that there will be many versions of the denim blazer out there come 2011, and if they are paired with shorts, even better! Our favorite blazer is seen below:

For the trendsetters out there, we recommend scouring the vintage/thrift stores searching for a pair of worn out denim from the 1970′s. These days finding a good pair of vintage jeans is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack, but you still have a few months until Spring rolls around….Happy Hunting!

Why are Fashion Models So Thin and skinny?

Fashion Models always So Thin,Is that healthy? If so,how can I lose my weight? ... Thin Models are what many think, has an adverse effect on the body image.

Many people decry the very thin fashion models, commonly seen treading the catwalk or in photo displays. Thin fashion models are in, which many think has a negative impact on the body image of all women, and especially young girls. Most designers clearly state that clothes hang better on thin fashion models. Yet if we look at models from the 1950s or earlier, they didn’t appear to suffer from lack of beauty due to a slightly fuller figure.

Of the many statements from both models and actresses with anorexia, we know that trying to retain super thin status be very difficult. While there are some women who seem to run naturally very thin, and others seem not diet has very little to do with it. Forcing a super thin ideal in the public clearly influenced public taste, and can be very damaging to young girls try to drop weight to unrealistic andunhealthy goals. Many hope that Spain leads the decision of the trend away from very thin to a better nourished and healthier model. It shows that certainly some designers are now ready to better care for their models, which enrich their work by designers take.

Top 10 denim trends for teen girls in spring

For 2011, we’ll be seeing a continuation of mixing of different denim styles. While there will be a 70′s theme this coming year, the best way to keep your look updated is by integrating with modern elements. Besides, it’s more fun to mix it up. And with all the wonderful style blogs to read there’s a nice for everyone’s style.

So here it goes, my top ten trend picks for 2011!
denim trends 2011

10. Elastic cuffs

In 2010 we saw the introduction of the denim sweatpant. I mean why not? Sweats were hot this year, and while only a few ultra chic were able to really pull it off, I don’t think we’ve seen the end of it. Raven’s Wren Jean is a hybrid between a slouchy skinny jean and a sweatpant with an elastic cuff. I love these jeans, and didn’t put much thought into it, until I saw a slew of elastic cuffed jeans at Zara. I think these will be great for the spring and summer months because it’s a style that would look so great with espadrilles. Of course, what better way to show off your ankles?

9. Denim Leggings

If you’ve read this blog for any amount of time, you would know how much I love denim leggings. I love them. Every one I know who has bought a pair of good denim leggings loves them too. So, while they may not be new..they’ll be around this year just as well. One thing we’ll see more of is an evolution of the ‘denim legging’ they’re not truly denim leggings, because the of the style, but made with a similar fabric content. This is a great development in denim. You bet I’m going to be getting a pair in 2011.

8. Rolled cuffs

Ok, Ok, I bet the people have been rolling their jeans since the California Gold Rush when jeans were first invented for the miners. But since Katie Holmes rolled her boyfriend jeans this trend has been on the map, we’ve seen a lot of jean rolling going on. I also credit J. Crew’s styling for rolling everything that will bring the rolled jeans to the mainstream for 2011.

7. Cargo Jeans

This year we experienced Houlihan madness. If there were a pair of jeans that signified 2010, it’s the J Brand Houlihan. Well, something that good can’t disappear overnight. Looking at some lookbooks for next season, the cargo jean will still be a big player for 2011, but there will be an evolution with the pockets, sleeker, with bigger front pockets, less flap and more relaxed cut. You’ll love the new cargo jeans just as much especially for the spring and summer.

6. Trouser style jeans

via Style.com

I have always loved the wide-legged trouser jean. Always. The classic cut can do no wrong with all the ease of denim. It’s the perfect combination, especially for those who have been denim shy, and for the girls who love dresses. There was an amazing pair of trouser jeans Celine’s SS11, and with Celine being so hot these past few years, I’m guessing that it’ll be an influencer for 2011 as well. I also loved the double denim in this collection, never has it looked so crisp and classic. Definitely for ladies who lunch.

5. The rise has risen….

When low-rise hit the scene ten years ago, it was a new era for denim. Who knew it would last so long. I gotta tell you, that the low rise had it pitfalls. Muffin top anyone? High Waisted & Midrise, is gaining momentum in 2011, especially since a few other trends that are going to be big next year will go perfectly with a high waisted rise. It’ll be the perfect fashion jean and dramatic look that will make an outfit. Besides it’s more flattering as it forms better to you hips. I never liked the plumber look anyway.

4. Minimal Washes

As much as distressing adds a bit more excitement to your jeans, I don’t think you’ll bee seeing a lot of heavy distressing in 2011. Already in 2010, a cleaner wash with significantly less distressing than in 2008/2009 (remember the Margiela ripped jeans?). Maybe it’s the 70′s influence back when you had to break in your jeans, or maybe we just wanted a more classic look. I’ve been a much bigger fan of a clean wash, and am glad to see it’s return.

3. Denim Shorts

I love denim shorts. They’re easy, they go with everything, and when it’s hotter then hell outside, they’re the perfect thing to wear. We’ll be seeing a lot of denim shorts this summer, with a higher rise…thank god. A low rise denim short is a bit too hoochie for me. A high waisted denim short looks more put together, more deliberate and has a lot character. It’ll be fun to see how they hit the streets this year.

2. Long Denim Skirts

When the Shopbop denim buyer, Alana Goldsmith Brown, said she had long denim skirts coming for next year… I automatically said YES! It makes perfect sense. Long skirts made their way back this year. That 70′s look is will be the big thing next year, and what perfect combination than to have a long denim skirt? I’m really excited to see how this manifests, who can pull it off and what kinds of washes are going to work the best for 2011. I kept thinking of the McQ AW10 long black denim skirt, that was so goth in a very good way. And Genetic Denim already launched their Chloe Open Front Long denim skirt…which is sexy on it’s own and can be layered with the sheerest of sheer as well. The long denim skirts will have a lot of versatility that way, and perfect for spring and fall.

1. Bell Bottoms

from What is Reality Anyway?

If you haven’t heard bell bottoms were going to come back, I have to ask, where have you been? Just kidding. Once someone was shocked, SHOCKED I hadn’t heard of Jonathan Franzen. So yeah, we all listen closely to different things. Anyway, back to bell bottoms. They’re going to be a hit this season. I’m not going to say big…because they’ll generally have a 18-22″ leg opening, that is tight right up to the knee. They’ll have modern elements, but most of all they’ll be crisp, classic and very chic. I can already see how I’m going to wear my bells for next year, with ultra high heels and floppy hats. 2011 is going to be a lot of fun for denim.
